Can Adding Weight To Your Car Improve Acceleration?

In winter driving you may see sand bags in the back of pickup trucks used for more grip. Can adding weight to a car really improve acceleration? Let's do the math and find out!

There are several important factors to consider when adding weight to a car. First, the placement of the weight is critical. The weight should be added as far back as possible if the vehicle is RWD, and adding weight should only be done with 2WD vehicles in conditions where there is not enough traction to accelerate. Most FWD vehicles will be fine, as the weight of the engine causes the weight distribution to favor the front. It's also important to know that this only helps in situations where you are traction limited, and adding weight when you do not have enough power to brake the tires free will only result in worse acceleration, handling, braking, and fuel economy.
